Madame Curie: A Biography

Madame Curie: A Biography

Marie Sklodowska Curie (1867–1934) was the first woman scientist to win worldwide acclaim and was, indeed, one of the great scientists of the twentieth century. Written by Curie’s daughter, the renowned international activist Eve Curie, this biography chronicles Curie’s legendary achievements in science, including her pioneering efforts in the study of radioactivity and her two Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry. It also spotlights her remarkable life, from her childhood in Poland, to her storybook Parisian marriage to fellow scientist Pierre Curie, to her tragic death from the very radium that brought her fame. Now updated with an eloquent, rousing introduction by best-selling author Natalie Angier, this timeless biography celebrates an astonishing mind and a extraordinary woman’s life.

Customer Review: The Hobo Philosopher
This book should be on every Mother’s list of gifts for her daughter. What a beautiful portrait of a mother by her daughter. In this age of “feminism” this should also be a must read for women in general. Madame Curie was in a class of intellectual genius by herself. She is one of the most outstanding woman scientists ever - and she was Polish!
She is a great example as a human being, a woman, a mother, a “Polack”, a scientist, a wife. Needless to say I was very impressed by the book. The thought that this was written so beautifully by this woman’s daughter never left my awareness. This book certainly made this half-Polack extremely proud of his heritage.
Customer Review: Unforgettable.
This is one of the books that will remain closest to me…the kind of book I would definitely have on my own children’s bookshelf. I unfortunately had to stop reading the book midway because the library wanted it back, and I was also going to be out of town. Three months later, I still felt compelled to go back to the library and finish off the remaining two or three chapters.

Eat This Not That: Thousands of Simple Food Swaps That Can Save You 10, 20, 30 Pounds-or More!

Eat This Not That: Thousands of Simple Food Swaps That Can Save You 10, 20, 30 Pounds-or More!

Eat what you want, when you want–and watch the pounds disappear!
Americans spend more than $400 billion a year eating out, and behind each burger, turkey sandwich, and ice cream sundae is a simple decision that could help you control your weight—and your life. The problem is, restaurant chains and food producers aren’t interested in helping you make healthy choices. In fact, they invest $30 billion a year on advertising, much of it aimed at confusing eaters and disguising the fat and calorie counts of their products.
All of that has changed with EAT THIS, NOT THAT!. This book puts the entire food industry under the spotlight, and arms you with the savvy tricks and insider information it takes to eat well no matter where you are. With EAT THIS, NOT THAT! you’re the expert in every eating situation, from the frozen food aisle to your favorite fast food joint to your local sports bar. You control your food universe—and lose the pounds you want–because, unlike every other customer, you’ll know the smart choices to make—instantly!
EAT THIS, NOT THAT! is jam-packed with secrets the restaurant industry doesn’t want you to know. For example:
• Burger King doesn’t want you to know that a BK Big Fish Sandwich and fries have a whopping 1000 calories—nearly half your daily caloric intake! (Fish is usually healthy, but not this kind. Find out why with this book.)
• Pizza Hut doesn’t want you to know that a standard pizza in Italy contains 500 to 800 calories, but the same meal at Pizza Hut can top 2,100 calories! (You’d need to ride a stationary bike for more than three hours to burn off this mistake. Instead, eat all the pizza you want by making smart choices. EAT THIS, NOT THAT! shows you how.)
• Macaroni Grill doesn’t want you to know that a single serving of their Grilled Teriyaki Salmon has more than three times your daily allowance of sodium! (Cut your risk of high blood pressure by making smart choices at the same restaurant. You’ll find them inside.)
If only you knew the industry secrets, you could eat at any of your favorite restaurants—or chow down on everything from the company vending machine to your kids’ Halloween buckets—and know that every decision you made was smart, healthy, and the best possible choice for you. For example, did you know:
• At McDonald’s, an Egg McMuffin is actually a healthy choice, with just 300 calories. (The Hotcakes pack more than double that amount!)
• At Krispy Kreme, all you need to do is order the Very Berry Chiller instead of the Mocha Dream Chiller, and you’ll save 500 calories! (Do that once a week and you’ll drop more than 7 pounds this year—without trying!)
• At Chipotle, you can cut 570 calories out of your Chicken Burrito just by ordering it as a bowl (without the tortilla) and asking them to hold the rice. (Same great taste, but with 94 fewer carb grams!)
• Choosing a cinnamon roll at Au Bon Pain over Cinnabon will save you 463 calories and 20 grams of fat!
• In the freezer section of your local supermarket, a turkey pot pie from Swanson’s has 610 fewer calories than a turkey pot pie from Pepperidge Farms.
• In the produce aisle, you’ll get twice the vitamin C—and nine times as much vitamin A—simply by picking red bell peppers over green ones. (Who said eating healthy was difficult?)
And that’s why EAT THIS, NOT THAT! is going to change everything. It’s time to level the playing field. We’re all tired of sneaky calories adding to our waistlines, and having to starve ourselves or spend hours on the treadmill trying to burn off the damage. Now—for the first time—you’re in charge. With this simple illustrated guide to thousands of foods–along with the nutrition secrets that lead to fast and permanent weight loss–you’ll make the smartest choice every time!

Customer Review: Great for those who eat out a whole lot
I was hoping for a lot more tips that I could use in my own kitchen, but that’s not the type of book this is. For those who eat on the go very often, this can be useful. Overall, it felt more like a review of fast food restaurants in America. Some of the calorie counting was only marginally helpful. Like I said, if you eat out for almost every meal, and if you are just really strict about calories and need to watch every bite, then this may be right for you.
Customer Review: Excellent resource book!
This book is the “food bible”!!! My husband and I learned so much from this book and I bought it for 3 friends as gift already! If you are interested in what you are eating and how you can improve, you want to buy this book.

Prentice Hall Literature: The British Tradition, Penguin Edition

Prentice Hall Literature: The British Tradition, Penguin Edition Customer Review: Heavy and expensive but good!
First of all, I have to teach from this textbook for my seniors in a New Jersey city high school. Anyway, the pictures are lovely and there is plenty of appropriate questions and exercises for the students to do in class. Do I think it’s worth the price or worth to be used in New Jersey high schools? Well, look at it this way, these books were really published with the intent for students to pass the New Jersey High School Proficiency Test. While Prentice Hall is making lots of money, I don’t think these high price textbooks are any more useful than anthologies in the classroom where the teacher can choose from a large selection. These books are meant for students to pass a test that millions of dollars are spent. Do I think they are worth it? I don’t know but I would like to have more choices for my lesson plans.

Customer Review: great
im a judoka and this book is one of the best available. it reminds all judoka to stop relying on the gi. the techniques are completely different from anything ive ever see before. also ive never seen such detail in a martial arts book. you literally get 3 camera angles for most techniques. the only thing i would say is if you dont have any judo experience you’ll problably have trouble with this book, this is not basic judo.
Customer Review: Victory Belt gets better and better
Wow. I thought this would be all throws. There are throws, counter throws, a whole soi age seciton, a whle osoto gari section, Tai Otoshis, Harai Goshis, and Uchimatas galor from all kinds of setups andcounters. Tere are a handful of throws off of the Kimura hold. There are even some good old double and single leg takedowns. There are methods of clinching and even striking to get the clinch. There’s a section on Judo pins. Mount, Side Control, Scarf, reverse scarf, and north-south all have their own sections on transitions and sumissions. There are a lot of unique Hayastan/Gokor style subs I have NEVER seen in 13 years of MA training. The book ends with Ground and Pound techniques.
